In 2012 Mongabay.com launched a non-profit organization: mongabay.org, which has tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to Mongabay.org are deductible to U.S. taxpayers under section 170 of the Code. Mongabay.org is classified as a public charity.

Mongabay.org aims to raise awareness about social and environmental issues relating to forests and other ecosystems. It has five focal areas:

Special reporting initiatives. Expected to begin in the second half of 2013
Translation and non-English reporting on forest issues. Priority languages include Latin American Spanish and Indonesian.
Educational materials, standards-based modules, and activities for K-8 children developed by school teachers and curriculum experts. Expansion of the education program is underway with the help of an elementary school teacher and curriculum expert.
Tropical Conservation Science (TCS), an open-access academic journal that aims to provide opportunities for scientists in developing countries to publish their research. TCS does not charge any fees to readers or authors.
