ARIEL MARK

Ariel is excited to experience her first taste of environmental journalism as an intern with Mongabay. She hopes to share her enthusiasm for nature and inspire readers to want to learn about and pursue current environmental issues. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, Ariel enjoyed urban city life juxtaposed with the serene landscapes of surrounding natural open spaces and state parks.

As a little girl, Ariel loved getting her feet wet while fishing for critters in the creek next to her home and caring for unusual pets: a green tree frog, hermit crabs, a rat and a Dutch Dwarf rabbit. Her joy for nature has expanded from taking care of little animals to a budding interest in sustainable agriculture, wetland and aquatic ecosystems and natural resource management. Ariel graduated with a degree in Environmental Science and Management from the University of California, Davis. She has spent much time abroad where she worked on organic farms in Greece and Germany and participated on a fish toxicology research project at the Berlin Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology. Ariel currently lives in Berlin, Germany and is tapping into her love for baking, as a baker at a Scandinavian bakery. Ariel also enjoys traveling and immersing in different cultures, practicing her German, biking as her main mode of transportation, and painting for local art exhibits.
