POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Bilingual Writer will be responsible for adapting articles on a daily basis about environmental issues—especially those related to forests, wildlife, land use, and conservation— to be published on our English and Spanish-language sites. We are looking for someone who can write publication-ready stories in both English and Spanish without need of further editing.

This is not a translation position.

The Bilingual Writer will need to produce summarized versions of articles written in Spanish so that they can be published on our English site (and vice versa) while ensuring the content meets Mongabay’s high standards of professionalism, consistency, authenticity, and reliability. Although original writing would not be one of the main tasks of the Bilingual Writer, he or she may be asked to produce original stories occasionally.

This person should have strong analytical skills and the ability to discern what stories are important and of interest to readers. Knowledge and familiarity with environmental issues and/or forest conservation are strong positives.

The Bilingual Writer must be a native speaker of Spanish and English (or have exceptionally good command of their second language) and have strong writing skills. Experience in journalism or media is a strong positive.

REQUIREMENTS, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS

  • Two or more years experience and demonstrated talent in writing in English and Spanish is required. An ability to work independently is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail required.
  • The Bilingual Writer should possess good technical skills, including working experience with Microsoft and familiarity with WordPress. Basic HTML coding is a bonus.
  • Must be able to work with tight deadlines. Must be responsive to Mongabay.com headquarters via email.
  • Regular access to the Internet is required. Must be willing to commit to full-time role (40 hours a week) and be available during regular business hours.

COMPENSATION

The salary for this position depends on prior experience.

TO APPLY

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Sunday, July 31st.  Please submit a cover letter, resume, and the contact information for two personal recommendations via our online application system to be considered for this role.
