Mongabay is a nonprofit conservation and environmental science news platform that publishes original content in English, Indonesian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi and French. We aim to raise awareness and inform decision making about social and environmental issues related to forests and other ecosystems through our environmental news* reporting and analysis as well as environmental education materials.

Mongabay is a 501(c)(3) public charity incorporated in California and registered in most U.S. states. Our EIN (tax ID) is 45-3714703.

Mongabay produces original, impact-driven news from Nature’s frontline on a daily basis in multiple languages. Mongabay runs several journalism initiatives:

  • Mongabay-Global (Established in 2005): houses all of our reporting and journalism that doesn’t fall under our bureaus listed below. This includes Mongabay-Brasil, our Portuguese environmental news service.
  • Mongabay-Indonesia (2012): is our Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) news service which covers issues across the world’s most biologically-diverse archipelago.
  • Mongabay-Latam (2016): our Spanish-language news service for Latin America.
  • Mongabay-India (2018): produces stories in English and Hindi.
  • Mongabay-Africa (2023): is our newest bureau. It currently covers issues across the continent in French and English.
  • Mongabay Data Studio (2024): Our data journalism initiative. Mongabay Data Studio bridges the divide between environmental science and action by developing impactful tools, creating insightful data journalism and connecting a network of credible partners.
  • Special reporting projects: allow journalists to do sustained, in-depth reporting on particular environmental topics and geographies.

Mongabay operates multiple education initiatives serving different audiences:

  • Internships and paid fellowships strengthen journalists’ skills in a variety of ways.
  • Science communication training help scientists and NGOs improve their outreach to journalists and the media.
  • Mongabay Kids is our environmental education initiative that aims to provide high quality, engaging, and inspirational biodiversity and conservation media for kids (ages 6-14) around the world.
