What is the Sue Palminteri WildTech Reporting Fellowship?

This Fellowship is an excellent opportunity for journalists to apply their skills to write stories about conservation technology-related research at Mongabay.

Over the course of the part-time, six-month program, the WildTech Reporting Fellow will work directly with Mongabay editors to develop their writing skills and publish a series of their stories on Mongabay’s independent news platform, which has over four million global readers every month. The WildTech Reporting Fellow will receive a $5,000 honorarium for the duration of the program.

An opportunity for early career environmental journalists

According to Mongabay’s Program and Translation Specialist María Ángeles Salazar who coordinates the program, “The Sue Palminteri Wiltech Fellowship is a great opportunity for journalists in the first years of their careers who want to explore the advances of conservation technology, learn about what’s working and what isn’t, and report on it, while getting feedback and guidance from experienced Mongabay editors.”

Previous WildTech Reporting Fellows have produced over 20 high-impact conservation technology stories. For example, Caitlin Looby wrote a story that discussed the considerations of cloning species on the brink of extinction, such as the black-footed ferret and Przewalski’s horse. Claudia Geib also published an article about a camera with an artificial intelligence system that could be trained to recognize specific animals in the field and sound an early alarm to help prepare villagers to repel elephants.
