Mongabay founder Rhett Butler was interviewed last week by the Breakthrough Institute on palm oil and his optimism for protecting the world’s forests. Butler noted that the palm oil debate shouldn’t be framed as “yes” or “no” question, but one that considers where the crop is grown. Specifically, conversion of rainforests and peatlands for industrial agricultural makes little sense when degraded non-forest land could be used instead.
