A November 2022 investigation Mongabay published about a Chinese company’s rampant and illegal shark finning operation led to global coverage in outlets including Forbes, led regulators to ban the gear which that fleet used, and spurred the U.S. Treasury to sanction the company. Also in November, a big feature in the Associated Press about oil drilling in the Colombian Amazon relied on a collaborative investigation by Mongabay-Latam and Cuestión Pública, while our coverage of deforestation in Brazil was quoted in a feature in The Hill that was republished by 40+ Fox News affiliates, and the news of Mongabay’s founder winning the Heinz Award for the Environment garnered a feature in The Straits Times.
Our reports were also discussed on the airwaves: editor Karla Mendes appeared again on the Al Jazeera program “The Stream” for a second time to discuss the momentous election results in Brazil.
