Mongabay in the news, January 2018

Among the most popular of our features that were referenced and republished elsewhere in the news media during January 2018 was the huge story Mongabay broke concerning a policy shift away from the building of mega-dams in the Amazon — such as here at Business Insider — these dam proposals have energized resistance among indigenous groups, NGOs, activists, and residents of the affected regions, so the change in direction by Brazil was a major announcement. Also of note in January was coverage of Mongabay’s opening of a new bureau in India, and a Mongabay report from a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh which was republished by numerous outlets including Pacific Standard: refugees in the camp are forced to strip the surrounding forests for building materials and cooking fuel, putting the camp at risk for mudslides when the rains return.
