    Founded in 1999, Mongabay is an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organization, which publishes original news on a daily basis in an objective (does not advocate), accurate (relies on facts and scientific information) and timely manner to a global audience of conservation scientists, private-sector decision-makers, government policymakers, civil society organizations, journalists in other media outlets, and interested members of the public. Mongabay’s readership across its news sites positions the organization as one of the top sources of environmental news, analysis, information, and inspiration on the Internet.

    What does the Engagement Editor do?

    Coordinating with our marketing and program teams, the Engagement Editor will be responsible for growing and retaining Mongabay’s English-language audience across channels , responding to inquiries and comments, and ensuring that our social media accounts are up-to-date with relevant information and news. This role will also be responsible for analyzing the performance of English language engagement activities and  monitoring emerging platforms to assess if they are aligned with Mongabay’s community engagement strategy.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    • Create and implement social media and communication campaigns to align with marketing strategies.
    • Gather text, image and video content for daily publication on social media accounts and weekly newsletters.
    • Respond to comments on Mongabay’s website and across social media platforms in a timely manner.
    • Track and analyze engagement metrics to inform marketing strategies.
    • Collaborate with Mongabay’s Marketing team to deliver on organizational goals and ensure brand consistency.
    • Organize and participate in events to build community and boost brand awareness.
    • Build and cultivate relationships with target audiences.
    • Monitor emerging platforms for potential alignment with Mongabay’s audience development and engagement goals.
    • Provide other support as needed to ensure content meets Mongabay’s high standards of professionalism, consistency, authenticity, and reliability.
    • Must be able to work within tight deadlines and be responsive to Mongabay.com headquarters and to other Mongabay staffers via email, video calls, phone and messaging platforms.

    Experience, Qualifications & Requirements

    • Two or more years of experience in audience engagement is required, particularly working for organizations in the journalism or conservation sectors is preferred.
    • Proven track record with organic content marketing and audience engagement.
    • Ability to identify and track relevant performance and engagement metrics for online communities and website traffic.
    • Exceptional fluency (writing and speaking) in English.
    • Hands-on experience with high-volume social media management.
    • Knowledge of digital marketing.
    • Reliable access to high-speed Internet is required.
    • Must be willing to commit to a full-time role (40 hours per week).
