HEATHER D’ANGELO

Similarly to Rhett Butler, Heather’s passion for tropical forest conservation was ignited after firsthand experience witnessing the outcome of massive deforestation while traveling in Southeast Asia. That trip inspired her to major in Environmental Biology at Columbia University and to make soil microbial communities within Malaysian oil palm plantations the focus of her senior thesis research. While doing her research, Heather frequently relied upon up-to-date news about oil palm plantations at Mongabay.com, so she’s thrilled to now have the opportunity to write for the organization.

In addition to her studies of tropical soil microbial ecology, Heather is also a member of the band, Au Revoir Simone. Her band was established in 2003 in Brooklyn, New York, and has released three full-length albums, one EP, and four remix albums in that time. She’s very grateful to have had the privilege of traveling all over the world while following her love of both science and music. Heather currently resides in San Francisco.
