Mongabay is a leading environmental news organization that is rapidly expanding worldwide. It is a dynamic organization with an ambitious strategic plan for the next 5 years. In the decade since its establishment as a non-profit, Mongabay has grown from an annual budget under $100,000 to one exceeding $7 million. We now have over 70 staff in more than 20 countries.

To continue on this impact trajectory, Mongabay is seeking to hire a development director who will report to the CEO, and lead the revenue development efforts for Mongabay.org. In addition, this executive will be responsible for the execution of a strategic vision to secure transformative philanthropic support for the organization.

This individual will work closely with Mongabay’s global program director, partnership director, marketing team, and the leadership of our international bureaus. The role includes regular interaction with the Executive Committee of the Board.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the CEO to design, structure, build and manage the development team required to support the organization’s revenue generation activities
  • Work to then secure financial support for the organization from the range of entities and individuals, foundations, government agencies, and other entities aligned with our donor policy and scale as outlined in the strategic plan, including:
    • Develop and execute Mongabay.org’s annual fundraising plan
    • Oversee donor prospecting efforts to generate qualified leads for the fundraising team
    • Oversee fundraising management systems and infrastructure
    • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors, which may involve occasional travel
    • Develop and organize fundraising events and activities aligned with our needs
    • Oversee proposals and reports for all foundation and institutional fundraising as well as major gifts
    • Develop and manage the PR and marketing efforts on all development activities in collaboration with Mongabay’s staff (including all fundraising materials like case studies, concept notes, and proposals, etc.)
    • Attend conferences and events to meet with funders and prospective donors.
  • Provide the board and leadership team with regular progress reports.

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Five-plus years experience in development/fundraising is required, particularly working for organizations in the journalism or conservation sectors is preferred;
  • A strong donor network, including relationships with foundations, family offices, and major individual donors;
  • Knowledge and familiarity with journalism is essential, conservation and environmental issues is a key component as well;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skill in English is required;
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and managerial skills;
  • Reliable access to high-speed Internet is required;
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally;
  • Must be willing to commit to a full-time role (40 hours per week) and available during regular business hours, with occasional travel to support the work plans as required; and
  • Must be able to work within tight deadlines and be responsive to Mongabay headquarters and to other Mongabay staffers via email, asana, skype, phone, and text.

LOCATION

This position is remote, with a preference for candidates based in time zones that enable coordination with Pacific Standard Time (PST). The position will require work across multiple time zones, and with colleagues around the world.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $96,000 – $180,000 USD depending on qualifications, experience, and cost of living in the candidate’s market. For candidates living in the United States and if eligible, benefits include company contribution towards medical health insurance, company-paid basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) plan, generous paid time off, and 11 paid holidays. Benefits accommodations are made for eligible candidates living outside the United States.
