Founded in 1999, Mongabay is an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organization, which publishes original news on a daily basis in an objective (does not advocate), accurate (relies on facts and scientific information) and timely manner to a global audience of conservation scientists, private-sector decision-makers, government policymakers, civil society organizations, journalists in other media outlets, and interested members of the public. Mongabay’s readership on its Global, Latin American, Indonesian, Indian, and African news sites positions the organization as one of the top sources of environmental news, analysis, information, and inspiration on the Internet.
What does the Contributing Editor Asia Pacific do?
The full-time Contributing Editor will be responsible for the production and publication of news articles sourced from the Asia Pacific region, averaging at least 12 per month. This editor will work closely with colleagues on Mongabay’s editorial team to bolster coverage of fast-paced environmental news in the Asia Pacific region. Priority topics include the status of high conservation value ecosystems and wildlife, the actions of natural resource industries, ocean conservation and fisheries, the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities, novel environmental science research, environmental governance and policy. The editor will help to grow and develop a team of freelance contributors and journalism fellows, manage assignments, edit articles, and ensure adherence to grant guidelines and reporting expectations. This person should have strong analytical skills and the ability to discern what stories are important and of interest to readers. Knowledge and familiarity with environmental issues in Southeast Asia or Australia is ideal.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
WRITING, REPORTING, EDITING, PUBLISHING (90% of time)
- Write, or commission and edit, English language environmental news in the Asia Pacific region, primarily Southeast Asia and Oceania;
- Work cooperatively with Mongabay editors and staff writers to develop story ideas, plan reporting activities, and publish multiple news articles per week, consistently of high quality;
- Gather and synthesize day-to-day environmental news coverage from third-party sources;
- Generate pitch requests and assess story proposals from freelance reporters;
- Grow a contributor network by manage fellow’s story assignments and providing mentoring on journalistic practices and subject matter knowledge, working closely with the Fellowship Editor to;
- Conduct interviews, phone calls and meetings, and perform other research as needed, to gather information for stories and planning special reporting projects;
- Research, fact-check, and review articles prior to publication;
- Source and/or produce visual content, including photos, videos, charts, and maps, as needed, for each article produced;
- Write, edit and post stories via Mongabay’s content management system (WordPress);
- Develop and participate in editorial partnerships between Mongabay and other journalism media outlets;
- Provide other support as needed to ensure content meets Mongabay’s high standards of professionalism, consistency, authenticity, and reliability.
STRATEGIC PLANNING & ADMINISTRATION (10% of time)
- Report regularly to Mongabay’s Managing Editor – Southeast Asia on progress toward meeting reporting objectives;
- Support editorial planning to reach established goals in the set timeline;
- Collect data on the impacts of stories by following up with sources to learn how content is being used;
- Must be able to work within tight deadlines and be responsive to Mongabay headquarters and to other Mongabay staffers via email, Asana, video call, phone, and text.
Experience, Qualifications & Requirements
- Three or more years of experience working in journalism is required, at least one year of editing experience is preferred;
- Exceptional fluency (writing and speaking) in English is required and working proficiency in a second language is ideal;
- Knowledge and familiarity with environmental science, natural resource industries, ocean conservation, and environmental governance is strongly preferred;
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated editorial ability to work with a variety of content including formatting of feature articles, graphics, photo captions, and HTML;
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, WordPress (or similar), Google Drive, social media, and project management software;
- Reliable access to high-speed Internet is required;
- Must be willing to commit to a full-time role and available during regular business hours;

Compensation & Location
As a globally distributed organization, there is no required location for this position. However, location is a consideration and an ability to coordinate with colleagues working in Asia (UTC+7 to 9 ) time zones is strongly preferred.
