Founded in 1999, Mongabay is an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organization, which publishes original news on a daily basis in an objective (does not advocate), accurate (relies on facts and scientific information) and timely manner to a global audience of conservation scientists, private-sector decision-makers, government policymakers, civil society organizations, journalists in other media outlets, and interested members of the public. Mongabay’s readership on its Global, Latin American, Indonesian, Indian, and African news sites positions the organization as one of the top sources of environmental news, analysis, information, and inspiration on the Internet.
What does the Production Editor do?
The Production Editor plays a leading role in Mongabay’s production hub, a department within our globally distributed newsroom responsible for maintaining and elevating the quality and quantity of Mongabay’s publications. The Production Editor will primarily be responsible for organizing and systematizing Mongabay’s editorial production schedule, coordinating with engagement teams to promote our journalism, and overseeing support services such as layout, translation, photo research, and copy editing. This role will oversee a team of editors and coordinators to ensure production processes are clear, efficient, and helpful across a multi-lingual organization. The Production Editor will report to the Executive Editor and provide support to Mongabay’s staff of editors and writers by monitoring production timelines, enforcing deadlines, and maintaining standards.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain editorial calendars, communicate publishing schedules, set deadlines, and monitor progress to efficiently reach publishing goals;
- Copy edit articles, video/podcast scripts, and graphics prior to publication, correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation and style;
Format, tag, and publish content on Mongabay’s websites and multimedia channels; - Coordinate with engagement and marketing teams to support the promotion of Mongabay’s journalism;
Develop production workflows and editorial support processes in collaboration with Mongabay’s Executive Editor and Operations Director; - Create and update production guidelines, reference documentation and editorial standards;
- Collect, organize, and process files and production data for use in Mongabay’s program management and grant reporting;
- Serve as the primary contact person of Mongabay’s production team for Mongabay’s regional bureaus, global desks, and editorial support departments, including video, copy editing, verification, translation, and marketing;
- Train and support Mongabay’s staff, fellows, and contractors on how to utilize Mongabay’s workflows and processes;
Supervise a team of editors and coordinators, including oversight of activities, job performance evaluation, and approval of personal leave and expenses; - Must be able to work within tight deadlines and be responsive to Mongabay headquarters and to other Mongabay staffers via email, Asana, Zoom, phone, and text;
- Provide other support as needed to ensure content meets Mongabay’s high standards of professionalism, consistency, authenticity, and reliability.
Experience, Qualifications & Requirements
- At least five years of professional experience in journalism or digital publishing is required;
- At least one year of professional experience with people management is preferred;
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
- Exceptional fluency (writing and speaking) in English is required;
- Experience using a content management system (such as WordPress) is required;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of content, including formatting of articles, graphics, photo captions, and HTML;
- Experience managing an editorial production process or project is preferred;
- Experience implementing or improving knowledge management systems is ideal;
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and project management software (Asana) is required;
- Reliable access to high-speed Internet is required; and
- Must be willing to commit to a full-time role (40 hours per week) and available during regular business hours;

Compensation & Location
As a globally distributed organization, there is no required location for this position. However, location is a consideration and an ability to coordinate with colleagues working in a diversity of time zones is strongly preferred.
