    Founded in 1999, Mongabay is an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organization, which publishes original news on a daily basis in an objective (does not  advocate), accurate (relies on facts and scientific information) and timely manner to a global audience of conservation scientists, private-sector decision-makers, government policymakers, civil society organizations, journalists in other media outlets, and interested members of the public. Mongabay’s readership across its news sites positions the organization as one of the top sources of environmental news, analysis, information, and inspiration on the Internet. 

    What Does the Senior Video Story Editor Do?

    Mongabay is seeking an experienced and highly organized Senior Video Story Editor to scale up our  visual journalism inspired by conservation and environmental science. This role will oversee the development, production, commissioning, and delivery of editorial video content, as well as tracking and managing production budgets. You will work with a global network of staff and freelance contributors to create, commission, and edit original content.

    The ideal candidate is both editorially sharp and operationally strong, someone who can identify strong stories, manage workflows and budgets, support storytellers, and ensure consistent, high-quality video output. You will also have demonstrated experience in video storytelling on digital platforms.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities

    Video Story Editing and Management (70%)

    • Oversee the development and production of video stories from pitch to publication;
    • Ensure content is accurate, engaging, and aligned with editorial priorities and standards;
    • Manage the full video pipeline: pitching, commissioning, storyboarding, scripting, production, post-production and publication;
    • Coordinate with staff and freelance producers across multiple time zones, including the logistics of video assignments;
    • Edit footage from field correspondents and stock libraries;
    • Troubleshoot production challenges and ensure projects stay on track;
    • Track and communicate production budgets, completing a budget report each month;
    • Provide clear editorial guidance and constructive feedback across all stages of production;

    Strategy and Planning (30%)

    • Execute an existing video strategy and contribute to short-term planning;
    • Support editorial planning to reach established goals in the set timeline;
    • Interpret and adapt to collected viewership data across various platform;
    • Help maintain a balanced content mix (topics, formats, geographies);
    • Support distribution efforts to maximize reach and engagement;
    • Work within tight deadlines and be responsive to Mongabay headquarters and to other Mongabay staffers via email, Asana, Slack, phone and text.
    • Manage annual budgets and productivity reports;

    Experiences, Qualifications and Requirements 

    • 5+ years of experience in editorial video storytelling and production. Working for a digital news outlet in an editorial role is preferred;
    • Proven experience managing video production workflows and working with freelancers and remote teams;
    • Advanced understanding of post-production, workflow and production management, including motion graphics and animation skills;
    • English as a first language (or exceptional fluency in both writing and speaking);
    • Proven experience managing and tracking production budgets;
    • Experience working with freelancers and remote teams;
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills;
    • Film/camera handling experience a plus, but not required;
    • High level of expertise with Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, YouTube, and Social Media
    • Familiar with Microsoft Office, WordPress (or similar), Google Drive and Asana (or similar).
    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under deadlines

    Compensation & Location

    The work of our organization changes as we continuously seek to have greater impact. All of our team members must be flexible and able to adapt to short and long-term shifts in their job duties. As a globally distributed organization, there is no required location for this position. However, location is a consideration and an ability to coordinate with colleagues working in a diversity of time zones is strongly preferred.
