News Bureaus

Mongabay is a globally distributed virtual newsroom with many specialized teams. Our bureaus are organized by geography and each consist of a team that includes multiple roles, such as editors, writers, multimedia producers and directors. This larger and more durable organizational structure is ideal for generating long-term progress as Mongabay grows in size and complexity to meet demanding challenges.

    Global Bureau

Mongabay was established in 1999 as an English-language news service dedicated to reporting about nature worldwide. Today, our largest bureau, Mongabay Global, is multilingual and responsible for the majority of news gathering activity. It is home to a variety of Reporting Desks that organize coverage on global themes, such as the Indigenous News Desk, Ocean Desk and Mongabay Brasil.

    Regional Bureaus

Mongabay decentralizes leadership toward the places featured in our reporting and encourages an experimental attitude toward work centered on adapting to local conditions and audience needs. At the same time, bureaus benefit from common, organizational infrastructure, which provides legal registration, accounting systems and a core operating model to develop.

    Africa

Mongabay Africa was launched in 2023 to scale up original multilingual reporting on issues relevant to the conservation of Africa’s wildlife and their habitats, development pressures and the activities of natural resource industries, and the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and communities across the continent.

    Indonesia

Mongabay began as an English-language news service in 1999, but it evolved its operating model in Indonesia. After identifying a potential tipping point in Indonesia’s natural resources management, Mongabay launched its Indonesian-language site in mid-2012. When it launched, Mongabay Indonesia filled an important gap in a media market that largely lacked environmental stories, garnering the attention of some of Indonesia’s top officials, including heads of key ministries.

    India

Mongabay India was launched in 2018 to serve a growing readership in India. The bureau is staffed by a diverse array of professionals and has a large network of contributors from across the country. Mongabay India became a multilingual bureau in 2020 by launching a Hindi version to engage a significantly larger number of journalists across the country, improving its geographic coverage and depth of reporting, and appeal to a far greater number of readers in India than English alone.

    Latin America

In 2016, Mongabay launched its second bureau, a Spanish-language news service covering environmental issues in Latin America. Mongabay Latam is staffed by a team spread throughout South and Central America and leverages a network of in-country reporters across the region. Many leading news outlets in Latin America carry Mongabay Latam’s content, greatly increasing their environmental coverage. Over the years, Mongabay Latam has established itself as a respected and reliable source, with impactful stories that have led to actions such as judicial authorities opening investigations and other media outlets consulting Mongabay staff for their expertise on environmental issues.
