The strips of habitat that connect ecosystems and the wildlife that inhabit them are known as “wildlife corridors.” They are critical areas that protect against the impacts of human infrastructure and settlement. They can enable wildlife populations to migrate, breed, and sustain themselves via genetic diversity.
In this edition of Mongabay’s webinar series, we examine how journalists can report on corridors and answer key questions related to their use in law, policy, scientific research, conservation, and human development.
Joining the panel are:
- Prachi Thatte from the Coalition for Wildlife Corridors
- Arthur D. Middleton from the University of California, Berkeley
- Liz Kimbrough staff writer at Mongabay

The experts
LIZ KIMBROUGH
Liz Kimbrough is a staff writer for Mongabay. She has written about science and environmental issues since 2012 and holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Tulane University where she studied the microbiomes of trees.
ARTHUR D. MIDDLETON
Arthur Middleton is the Goertz Professor of Wildlife Management in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley. Middleton’s research group studies how environmental change affects the behavioral, population, and community ecology of wide-ranging wildlife, and the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation efforts. He has often collaborated with photographers, artists, filmmakers, and media organizations to communicate about science and conservation to the general public. Middleton served as a Senior Advisor for Wildlife Conservation at the US Department of Agriculture from 2022-2025, and currently co-directs the Stone Center for Environmental Stewardship at UC Berkeley.
PRACHI THATTE
Prachi Thatte is a researcher and conservationist interested in conservation beyond protected areas. Her PhD focused on understanding how wild mammals navigate through human-modified landscapes using landscape genetics approaches. Prachi worked with the World Wide Fund for Nature, integrating research and advocacy, working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to advance conservation planning and effective management of wildlife corridors. Prachi coordinates the Coalition for Wildlife Corridors- a multi-NGO network working towards securing connected natural landscapes across India.
