Short videos on wildlife, climate and environmental solutions (Spanish only)

Mongabay and Ladera Sur are launching an open call to select ideas for short videos on environmental topics in Latin America.

We are looking for original visual proposals with strong narrative potential that address stories related to wildlife, climate and environmental solutions in the region. The selected ideas will be turned into 60-second vertical short videos designed to reach digital audiences.

The final videos will be published in Spanish and English on Mongabay’s and Ladera Sur’s websites and social media channels, expanding the reach of urgent, inspiring and relevant environmental stories for Latin America and the world.

The call will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on July 8 (GMT-4). Interested applicants must submit their proposals through this form, in Spanish. (please select Spanish in the drop down menu)

Each selected proposal will receive USD $1,000 for its development and production.

    What are we looking for?

Proposals for short journalistic videos that tell original environmental stories with strong visual potential. Topics may include, among others:

    • Wildlife conservation and biodiversity.
    • Environmental solutions led by communities, scientists, organizations or local initiatives.
    • Ecosystem restoration and protection.
    • Scientific innovation for environmental protection.
    • Climate crisis impacts on territories and communities.
    • Creative approaches that cover the environment through the lens of pop culture, sports, fashion, art, design, responsible consumption, sustainable tourism or other areas of everyday life.

We are looking for original ideas capable of condensing a strong story into a short format, with a clear visual hook that captures attention in just a few seconds and connects with broad audiences on social media and digital platforms.

    Format of the final videos

The selected ideas will become 60-second vertical videos that must have a clear journalistic approach: real stories, verified information and a direct connection to environmental issues in Latin America.

Creative freedom will be allowed in the use of formats and visual resources, including interviews, original footage, archival material, illustration, animation, photography, graphics, voice-over narration or other resources that strengthen the story and make it more engaging for digital audiences.

To help guide the type of stories, narrative approaches and visual resources we are looking for, we are sharing a few reference links:

These references should not be understood as mandatory formats, but as a source of inspiration.

    Keys to a successful proposal

For a successful proposal, it is essential to include three key elements that demonstrate both the creative strength and the feasibility of the project:

    • A detailed brief, up to 500 words, describing the video content and summarizing the environmental story to be told, while highlighting its visual hook and journalistic angle for a 60-second vertical format.
    • A mood board that reflects the visual elements, tones and creative style envisioned for the final video, clearly communicating the planned tone and aesthetic.
    • A strong demonstration of the proposal’s viability, detailing how a high-quality social media video will be produced, including how journalistic standards will be met — logistics, budget, production timeline, etc. — while combining visually engaging resources that can capture the attention of digital audiences within the first few seconds.

    Who can apply?

The call is open to filmmakers, journalists, audiovisual creators, producers, illustrators, animators and communicators over the age of 18 who reside in Latin America or have work experience in the region.

Proposals must have a journalistic purpose and the potential for professional publication. Academic assignments, classroom exercises or student projects will not be accepted.
