Willie Shubert
About
Willie Shubert is the Vice President of Programs and Executive Editor for Mongabay. He leads its global newsroom through the editorial direction of Mongabay’s award-winning journalism projects. Willie oversees newsgathering and publishing in English and created Mongabay’s video and investigative programs. He has collaborated with thousands of journalists to craft in-depth stories and create publications, which have amplified the voices of people living closest to hotspots of environmental change. He has managed and edited time-sensitive story campaigns engaging journalists to produce in-depth multimedia content for their media houses. Previously, Willie was the Senior Program Officer for Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, Willie managed programs throughout Asia and led the network’s global technology initiatives. During this time, he co-authored a guidebook for journalists about climate change in Africa published by UNESCO and created nine environmental journalism websites. Willie started his journalism career at National Geographic Magazine, where he coordinated translation for the magazine’s local language editions. He graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt with a BA degree in Geography with concentrations in cartography, environmental economics, and Chinese Studies.
