In 2021, Mongabay established an Indigenous desk to increase citations of Indigenous sources within Mongabay’s reporting and serve Indigenous audiences with relevant information. The desk includes journalists who identify as Indigenous and has a proven record of producing high-quality, original reporting with Indigenous communities worldwide. Despite increasing recognition of the critical role Indigenous people play in protecting nature and stemming biodiversity loss, Indigenous communities face significant challenges to mobilize to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to conservation initiatives. Systemic barriers include a lack of representation in national and international media narratives. The Indigenous desk works to address this gap in the media sector by engaging Indigenous people both as sources in reporting and as the journalists who author it.
