In 2022, Mongabay established its first endowment, the Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program, which provides opportunities for journalists from biodiversity hotspots in tropical countries to report on critical environmental issues.

This fund originated from a designated gift, mandating the contribution be overseen as an endowment, thereby ensuring the fellowship’s ongoing operation indefinitely.

Looking ahead, Mongabay anticipates the establishment of additional targeted endowment funds. We expect that these funds will receive support explicitly intended for endowment purposes, reflecting donors’ specific wishes to contribute to endowments rather than the allocation of unrestricted funds or general donations for such objectives.
