Winnie is currently the Senior Director of Sustainability Technology at Nike. She leads the technology efforts to drive sustainability throughout the enterprise, including product creation, supply chain, and data analytics.

Before her tenure at Nike, Winnie had key environmental roles at Google, where she served as the Director of Energy and Head of Data Center Sustainability. Her efforts there improved energy and water efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and helped curb other environmental impacts of data centers. While at Google, she spearheaded an effort to ban the sale of ivory through Google Ads and Google Shopping. That initiative led her to co-found the Global Tech Industry Coalition with WWF, a movement to stop online sales of endangered animal products, aligning tech companies like Microsoft, Facebook, and eBay. Now boasting 21 members from diverse regions, this coalition underscores her exceptional ability to unite major tech companies towards a common conservation goal.

“I’m excited about Mongabay’s vision to diversify its editorial agenda to cover global environmental issues, and its plan to strengthen impact through meaningful audience engagement,” said Winne Lam. “I’m humbled to have the opportunity to partner with Rhett Butler, the talented team that he has built over the years, and the Mongabay’s Board.”

Winnie Lam’s joining the Mongabay board marks a significant milestone in the organization’s journey toward a more sustainable and informed world. Her expertise and leadership will boost Mongabay’s impactful environmental reporting at a time of rapid organizational growth.

“With her depth of knowledge about how conservation can leverage technology and big data to achieve real-world results, Winnie’s addition to the board comes at a critical moment for Mongabay,” said Butler. “Last month, we rolled out Mongabay Data Studio, which aims to bridge the divide between environmental science and action by developing impactful tools, creating insightful data journalism and connecting a network of partners. Winnie’s experience and expertise will be immensely valuable in making Data Studio a success.”
