Online Community Manager (Asia)

Founded in 1999, Mongabay is an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organization, which publishes original news on a daily basis in an objective (does not advocate), accurate (relies on facts and scientific information) and timely manner to a global audience of conservation scientists, private-sector decision-makers, government policymakers, civil society organizations, journalists in other media outlets, and interested members of the public. Mongabay’s readership across its news sites positions the organization as one of the top sources of environmental news, analysis, information, and inspiration on the Internet.

Mongabay is expanding its online presence and is seeking a community manager in Asia to build and maintain our presence across several community-building platforms, such as Reddit, Discord, LinkedIn, and Telegram.

WHAT DOES THE ONLINE COMMUNITY MANAGER DO?

Coordinating with our marketing and program teams, the Online Community Manager will be responsible for engaging with the community, responding to inquiries and feedback, and ensuring that our social media accounts are up-to-date with relevant information and news. You would also be responsible for monitoring emerging platforms (e.g. Post, Spoutible, Bluesky, Lemon8, etc.) to see whether they might be aligned with Mongabay’s community engagement strategy.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and implement social media and communication campaigns to align with marketing strategies.
  • Provide engaging text, image and video content for social media accounts and newsletters.
  • Respond to comments across social media platforms in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with Mongabay’s Marketing Associate, Audience Engagement Associate and broader team to deliver on organizational goals.
  • Contribute to building and/or expanding Mongabay’s presence on community-centric platforms (i.e. Reddit, Discord, Telegram, Facebook Groups, etc.).
  • Organize and participate in events to build community and boost brand awareness.
  • Coordinate with the marketing and program teams to ensure brand consistency.
  • Build relationships with target audiences.
  • Monitor emerging platforms for potential alignment with Mongabay’s audience development and engagement goals.
  • Provide other support as needed to ensure content meets Mongabay’s high standards of professionalism, consistency, authenticity, and reliability.
  • Must be able to work within tight deadlines and be responsive to Mongabay.com headquarters and to other Mongabay staffers via email, Skype, phone and messaging platforms.

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Two or more years of experience in managing online communities is required, particularly working for organizations in the journalism or conservation sectors is preferred.

  • Proven work experience as a community manager.
  • Ability to identify and track relevant performance and engagement metrics for online communities and website traffic.
  • Exceptional fluency (writing and speaking) in English.
  • Hands on experience with social media management for brands.
  • Knowledge of online marketing and marketing channels.
  • Reliable access to high-speed Internet is required.
  • Must be willing to commit to a full-time role (40 hours per week).

COMPENSATION & LOCATION

The work of our organization changes as we continuously seek to have greater impact. All of our team members must be flexible and able to adapt to short and long-term shifts in their job duties. As a globally distributed organization, this position is remote with a preference for candidates based in time zones overlapping primarily with working hours in Asia.
