Mongabay has selected science writer Claudia Geib to be its inaugural Sue Palminteri Wildtech Reporting Fellow. Her writing has previously appeared in National Geographic, NOVA, Hakai Magazine, Undark, Slate, and Atlas Obscura, among other publications.

Named for conservation biologist and Mongabay editor Sue Palminteri, who died suddenly in 2019, the fellowship tasks Claudia with covering news that explores the fascinating, ever-growing ways that technology helps scientists and conservationists to protect threatened species and habitats, and to peer deeper than ever into nature’s inner workings. Her reports will be added to the incredibly rich legacy of conservation technology coverage that Sue built in her years with Mongabay, and which has been continually added to by our staff since her passing.

“I’m honored to be selected for the Sue Palminteri Wildtech reporting fellowship, and hope to carry on the same tenacity, passion, and eye for excellent storytelling that I’m told Sue brought to all of her work,” Claudia said. “Technology has been utterly transformative in the conservation field over the past few decades, and I’m excited to both report on the incredible insights that it is providing, and take an analytical look at how tech can and does bring about real change for wildlife and their habitats.”

One of her very first stories to be published soon concerns how camera traps are providing vital new knowledge about an extremely rare and threatened Amazonian canine.

While not writing for Mongabay, she is likely to be found reporting on, or recreating in, her favorite environment: the ocean.
