Mongabay in the news, from the New Yorker to NASA

Our team’s reporting was cited or republished by outlets and institutions ranging from NASA to the New Yorker – and scientific research stalwarts like The Lancet and JSTOR Daily – among many others during the second quarter of 2023.

Freelance writers are key contributors to Mongabay’s work, and many of our top citations in other outlets lately were penned by these irreplaceable, independent journalists: NASA relied on a June 2023 report by Mongabay freelance contributor Sean Mowbray about forest carbon in western Brazil to publish a feature to its Earth Observatory (“Protected Areas Safeguard Climate”), while in the U.S., the Maine Monitor relied on freelance contributor Justin Catanoso’s reporting for Mongabay about the biomass industry to publish a wide-ranging feature about that state’s reliance on forest fuels, which was then republished by the Portland Press Herald and Bangor Daily News. Meanwhile the New Yorker’s exposé on tensions between rural communities and solar developers in India cited a case in the state of Karnataka covered by Mongabay-India senior staff writer Arathi Menon last year.

Freelancers interested to write for Mongabay can view the current list of paid reporting opportunities here.

Mongabay’s reporting was also discussed on radio and TV: staff writer Karla Mendes appeared on the Al Jazeera program “Inside Story” to discuss deforestation in the Amazon and Lula’s efforts to tackle it, while investigations editor Daniel Pye appeared on the U.S. syndicated radio show “Sea Change Radio” to discuss his April 2023 report on conservation philanthropy.

Mongabay regularly offers its writers and editors for interviews and speaking engagements like these, learn more and see a list of staff available for interviews here.

Numerous media outlets also chose to republish entire Mongabay reports: Fast Company published Mongabay tech writer Abhishyant Kidangoor’s feature for our conservation tech section on the X Prize’s rainforest challenge to their own pages, while the International News Lens republished staff writer Hans Nicolas Jong’s recent feature about how Indonesia and Malaysia are pushing back on new EU palm oil restrictions, and Minda News in the Philippines republished freelancer Bong Sarmiento’s report about how civet coffee boosts livelihoods and conservation in South Cotabato’s Mt. Matutum region.

We encourage fellow media outlets to also republish our features like this, too, and one can review our Creative Commons policies and guidelines here.
